Mexican whiteboy
Reflection
My reaction to this MWB seminar was good because it went more in-depth in the book and answered some of my questions. A comment Vivien had was “I feel like a fake Mexican that is what said and it pops out and said what mask he is wearing.” I thought this was inserting because I didn’t quite understand what masks Danny was wearing throughout the book and this helped me understand the masks more. A connection I have with this book is being a whiter color Mexican and most people don’t notice at first that I am Mexican because of my skin color. I felt I did well in contributing Ideas to the seminar but I need to work on sharing my questions or comments to the group.
Pre-write
1. What masks’ do Danny and Uno have to wear?
The mask Danny and Uno wear is the man box and to always be the tough kid. I think he wears these masks because during the beginning they both wanted to be the cool guy and the best at baseball. Also I think the other mask is tough because they are always fighting other people to show that they are not afraid of anybody. These are the mask I think Danny and Uno wear in the book Mexican White Boy.
2. Use the concepts of socialization to explain the book “Mexican White boy”.
The book Mexican Whiteboy is a good way to learn and study about the races and economic problems we have today. The story is based of two different people Uno is half Mexican and half white, Danny is half Mexican and half black. This book describes how Danny and Uno have been socialized by being foreign and having different skin colors. For example danny is a smart kid but the kids at his private school think he is a dumb kid based on his ethnicity. Danny thinks of himself as a fake Mexican because his skin color doses not match other Mexicans skin color.
3. What new insights did you gain about race and economic class in reading this book?
Some new insights I gained about race and economic class were there are places where the same races live together and all have the same economic class. I thought it was interesting in the book where lower class, Mexicans live in a poor neighborhood because I’ve never really heard of that before. Also it reminded me of some pro athletes that lived in some neighbor hoods like that and the only way out of that bad economic class is to be a professional athlete and get paid. These are some new insights for reading Mexican white boy.
